Editorial standards
What a Bangkok Lad article has to earn.
The point is not to translate a Thai source into smoother English. It is to explain the system it describes, show where the evidence ends, and fix the record in public when it is wrong.
Who is responsible
Bangkok Lad is the pen name of Tom Sirote, a Thai writer based in Bangkok and educated in economics and politics in the UK. Every article carries a byline linking to the author page. A pen name is not an excuse for an unaccountable publication: questions, corrections and enquiries go to hello@bangkoklad.com.
What the publication is for
This is an English-language publication about Thailand’s systems, institutions and everyday life, reported from Thai-language source material. Its value should be the explanation and analysis around a source, not a paraphrase of it. An article that merely repeats a press release, an official announcement or another outlet’s work does not meet the standard.
How a reported article is built
- The article starts with a question readers can use, not a search term to fill.
- Its factual spine is checked against Thai-language material where available: official documents, public data, court or statutory texts, academic work, company material, or clearly attributed reporting.
- Facts, calculations and editorial interpretation are kept distinct. When an argument is Bangkok Lad’s analysis, the article says so.
- Each published article ends with a Sourcing note. It names the evidence, links public material where a stable useful link is available, and records important limitations rather than disguising them.
- The page shows when it was written and, where it has been substantively checked or changed, when it was updated.
What we do when the evidence is incomplete
A missing number is not filled with an estimate, and a disputed claim is not written as settled fact. Articles identify important gaps: an unavailable primary document, an old survey, a figure reported by rather than obtained from an institution, or an inference that the evidence supports only indirectly. If that limitation makes the article unsafe to publish, the article is held back or withdrawn rather than padded with confidence.
Advice-sensitive subjects
Tax, visas, property, health, employment and legal rules can change and may have serious consequences for individual readers. Articles in these areas explain public information; they are not personal tax, legal, medical, immigration or investment advice. A reader making a consequential decision should check the current primary source and take advice from an appropriately qualified professional. Where a rule is proposed rather than in force, that distinction is part of the article, not a footnote.
Independence and commercial interests
Bangkok Lad does not publish paid editorial, undisclosed sponsored posts or affiliate recommendations presented as reporting. An advertiser, donor, source or subject does not receive approval over an article. Advertising, where it appears, is separated from the article and is never loaded on harm-sensitive pieces or on navigation, policy and utility pages.
Illustrations, photographs and video
Visuals are evidence only when the article identifies them as such. Illustrative scenes are labelled Illustration and are not presented as documentary photographs. Documentary videos are linked as videos; a still or a cover image is not evidence for a factual claim by itself.
Corrections, updates and withdrawals
A factual error is corrected in the article and recorded on the Corrections page, with an account of what the earlier version said and what replaced it. A new source, new data point or routine re-check is an update, not a correction; it receives an updated date without pretending the article was newly written. When the evidential standard cannot be met, the responsible action is to remove the page from publication rather than to preserve its search traffic.
Challenge the work
The fastest useful correction names the claim, the source that contradicts it and, where possible, the relevant page or section. Send it to hello@bangkoklad.com. Disagreement is welcome; an unsupported assertion is not treated as a correction merely because it is forceful.
