Bangkok's air: which months are actually bad, and why

Bangkok's PM2.5 hit 79–108 µg/m³ in January 2026 — nearly triple the Thai threshold. But it's seasonal, predictable, and largely blown in from somewhere else.

Bangkok’s air pollution has a reputation, and like most reputations it’s roughly half right.

The useful facts are that it is seasonal, predictable, and largely not Bangkok’s fault — which together mean it’s one of the few health risks in your life you can plan around with a calendar.

The season

Burning season runs roughly December to April, with the worst clustered from late February through March.

Outside that window, Bangkok’s air is unremarkable for a large Asian city — traffic and construction dust, nothing that will define your year.

Inside it, the numbers change character. In January 2026, Bangkok PM2.5 readings hit 79 to 108 µg/m³. Thailand’s own safety threshold is 37.5 µg/m³, so that’s roughly two to three times the domestic limit. On 14 January the city-wide average peaked at 58.1 µg/m³.

By 11 March 2026, the Pollution Control Department reported Bangkok had passed the worst of it, with air quality improved on the previous year.

So: four bad months, two genuinely unpleasant weeks somewhere in late February or March, and eight months where it isn’t the thing you think about.

That’s a materially different proposition from “Bangkok has terrible air,” and it’s the version that lets you make decisions — when to schedule a visit, when to book the trip home, when the air purifier earns its keep.

Where it comes from, which is the surprising part

The instinctive assumption is traffic. Bangkok has famous traffic, Bangkok has bad air, the connection writes itself.

Traffic contributes — diesel vehicles and construction dust are genuine local sources. But the seasonal spike, the part that takes the city from ordinary to hazardous, is agricultural burning, much of it outside Bangkok and a good deal of it outside Thailand.

Smoke from fires in Cambodia and eastern Thailand drifts into the central region, where stagnant weather traps it over the city.

Two consequences follow, and both matter.

Bangkok cannot fix this on its own. You could electrify every vehicle in the city and the February spike would still arrive, because it’s being produced in fields hundreds of kilometres away and delivered by the weather.

It’s a farming policy problem wearing an urban pollution costume. The solution set is crop residue management, harvest economics and regional agreements — not traffic measures. Which is why it persists: the people who could solve it aren’t the people breathing it, and the cost of not burning falls on farmers with the least capacity to absorb it.

The weather does the rest. The same stagnant conditions that trap the smoke are seasonal too, which is why the timing is so consistent year to year.

What it means for you

The threshold that matters is 150 AQI. Above that, children, older people, pregnant women and anyone with heart or lung conditions should not be outdoors. That’s the operational number to watch, and the dashboards report it live.

Short-term exposure is the documented risk — respiratory symptoms, asthma exacerbation, increased hospital visits during spikes. If you have asthma or a child with it, the season is genuinely something to manage rather than shrug at.

Practical, in rough order of usefulness:

  • An air purifier with a real HEPA filter, sized for the room you sleep in. Highest return of anything on this list, because you spend a third of the season in that room.
  • Keep windows shut on spike days. Bangkok’s outdoor air is not the fresh option in March.
  • Check the AQI before exercising outside. Running through a 150+ day undoes more than it achieves.
  • N95 or KN95 masks on bad days. Cloth masks do nothing for PM2.5.
  • Plan travel around it. If you have flexibility, late February and March are the months to be elsewhere.

Common misconceptions

“Bangkok’s air is always terrible.” It’s bad for roughly four months and unremarkable for eight.

“It’s the traffic.” Traffic and construction are constant local contributors. The seasonal spike is agricultural burning, largely from outside the city and often outside the country.

“Chiang Mai is worse.” Northern Thailand generally suffers a more severe burning season than Bangkok. Worth knowing if you’re choosing between them.

“A cloth mask helps.” Not against PM2.5. N95 or KN95, or don’t bother.

“It’s getting worse every year.” Not straightforwardly — the Pollution Control Department reported 2026 as improved on 2025. The trend is uneven rather than uniformly deteriorating.

“It’s just a Bangkok problem.” It’s a regional airshed problem involving several countries, which is precisely why it’s hard to solve.

What’s likely to change

Regional agreements on transboundary haze exist and have been strengthened repeatedly, with results that are best described as gradual. The underlying economics haven’t changed: burning is the cheapest way to clear crop residue, and the alternatives cost money that smallholders don’t have.

The plausible improvements are subsidised residue management and enforcement with compensation attached. Both are slow, both are expensive, and neither is a Bangkok municipal decision.

Meanwhile the mitigations are individual: purifiers, masks, and knowing which weeks to leave.

Final thoughts

The honest summary is that Bangkok’s air is a seasonal problem, mostly imported, largely outside the city’s control, and entirely predictable.

Predictable is the part worth holding onto. Most environmental health risks arrive without notice. This one has a calendar — December to April, worst in late February and March — which means you can buy a purifier in November, book your leave for early March, and spend the other eight months not thinking about it.

Which is, in its way, a better situation than a city with worse average air and no idea when it’s coming.
