Somebody has to be in the chair

Bangkok bars do take bookings. They just require a body in the chair to hold one, and nobody has finished work by six. So a market appeared that sells presence — ฿500 on a weekday, ฿700 at the weekend, at the 2021 rates two news reports recorded.

What is actually being sold What is actually being sold One evening at a Khaosan bar, as reported in March 2021 The venue does take bookings. It requires the table to be physically occupied to hold one. 4.00pm Worker cycles from home 5.00pm Table list opens seat taken 5-7pm Sitting there THIS IS THE PRODUCT 7.00pm Customer arrives job ends PPTV HD36 field report, Khaosan, 9 March 2021 — 2021 prices BANGKOK LAD

Around four in the afternoon, eight women aged between sixty and seventy cycle out of a community near Wat Samphraya and ride to Khaosan.

The bar opens its table list at five. There are chairs outside for people waiting. The women sit there from before five, get their tables when the list opens, order a drink, and stay in the seats until about seven — at which point a group of twenty-somethings arrives, and the job is over.

They are being paid to be present. That is the entire service. In March 2021 it paid ฿500 a table Monday to Thursday and ฿700 Friday to Sunday.

The rule that creates the trade

It is easy to assume this exists because the venues refuse reservations. They don’t.

Here is the actual problem, in the words of somebody who built a business out of it:

You can book. But the venue tells you to come and claim the table at six in the evening, and nobody has finished work by six, so the table goes.

That is a completely different rule from first-come-first-served, and it is the whole story. The venue is not rationing tables by who queues longest. It is asking for a deposit, and denominating the deposit in presence.

Which is, from the venue’s side, a sensible design. A bar with a limited number of tables on a Friday is ruined by no-shows. Taking a cash deposit excludes anyone who can’t front money and creates a refund argument every night. Requiring a person to physically be there proves the booking is real, costs the venue nothing to administer, and looks perfectly egalitarian: anybody can turn up early.

Except that presence is not evenly distributed either, and unlike money, presence can be bought from a stranger with no paperwork at all.

So the venue picked the deposit that looks fairest and is the easiest in the world to outsource.

What is actually being sold

Not a table. Not a queue place. Not access. The customer in most cases has already made the booking themselves.

What is being sold is a body in a chair between five and seven — the two hours in which the person who wants the table is still at work.

It is the purest possible labour transaction, and it has a property almost nothing else does: it requires no skill, no licence, no tool, no vehicle and no handling of the customer’s money. The only input is hours, and the only qualification is that your hours are worth less than the buyer’s.

This is why a 68-year-old and a university student are direct competitors in it, and why neither has an advantage.

The numbers, and they are five years old

Every figure below is from March 2021 and should be treated as a historical record rather than a current price list. The bars were closing and reopening at the time. The mechanism has not changed; the rates certainly have.

The Khaosan operation — ป้าป้ารับจองโต๊ะ, set up by a resident of that community. He started it with friends; when they took full-time jobs, he recruited older residents of his own community instead. Eight women, aged 60 to 70.

Weekday (Mon–Thu)Weekend (Fri–Sun)
Customer pays฿500฿700
Page owner keeps฿200฿100
The person sitting there gets฿300฿600

Note which way the split moves. The organiser takes less at the weekend, not more — the scarce input on a Friday is a person willing to give up their evening, not the booking platform.

ป้าแดง — Auntie Daeng, as the report called her — was 68 and three months into the work. Four days a week, never more than five hours a day, for about ฿1,000 a week, or ฿4,000–5,000 a month. She had been at home doing nothing before a neighbour brought her in. She described liking it: no physical effort, music, and conversation with the next table.

The other operation, กูจองโต๊ะเอง, was founded by three friends who lost their jobs at the same time. They had seen queue-for-hire and shopping-proxy work, and had themselves been turned away from a bar with no table.

The page went viral in a single night: three to four thousand likes by morning and over a hundred LINE messages a day. By the interview they had around twenty people, covering Kaset–Nawamin, Thonglor, Ekkamai, Khaosan and Pinklao. Rates from ฿350, with ฿500 for the first two hours on a weekday and ฿60 per hour after, ฿600 and ฿70 at the weekend.

Regular workers were making ฿14,000–15,000 a month. Students taking only Friday and Saturday made about ฿500 a day.

And the constraint was not demand. They turned work away: four or five tables on a weekday, a hard ceiling of about fifteen jobs on a Friday or Saturday, with more enquiries than that arriving. “Any more than that and it’s hard to control.”

The thing this site keeps looking for

Article 80 Money you can wear set out the first structural finding: an informal system works when it has a product standard and a published price, and harms people when it doesn’t. Gold has both. The underground lottery has a price and no standard. Article 112 Nobody is turned away found that มูเตลู has a price and can never have a standard, because you cannot observe whether an amulet worked.

Almost everything in this archive fails that test. This passes it, cleanly, on every count.

The product is exactly specified. A table, at a named venue, at a stated time, held until the customer arrives. There is no version of it that is ambiguously delivered.

The price is published, tiered by day and by hour, and in the Khaosan case the split between the organiser and the worker was disclosed to a journalist, which is more transparency than most formal employment offers.

And the delivery is verifiable within two hours. You arrive; either there is a table or there isn’t.

That last property is the one doing the work. The reason this market protects its weakest participant is not that the people in it are unusually decent. It is that nobody can be cheated for long in a transaction that resolves the same evening, in person, in front of the person who paid.

Which is why reliability, rather than price, is what the operators sell. The clearest statement of the business in either report is not about money: “we have no record of turning up late — we have never had bad feedback.” In a market where the good is time, punctuality is the product, and it is fully observable. A standard, a price, and a result you can see.

Why one queue got a price and one got a fight Why one queue got a price and one got a fight Same allocation rule, opposite outcome Delegability is the difference. Why the EV chargers got a fight and the bars got a market

Article 123 Nobody brought a ticket machine looked at a queue with exactly the same allocation rule and a completely different outcome. At a charging bay, the space also goes to whoever is present, and the result is arguments, notes on windscreens, and unplugged cables. No service industry appeared. Why not?

Because a charging bay must be held by your specific vehicle, and a table can be held by any body at all.

Presence is delegable. Presence-with-your-car is not.

That is the difference between a market and a fight, and it is worth stating plainly because it generalises: where a queue can be stood in by a proxy, a price appears and the conflict goes away. Where it cannot, the conflict is all there is.

Neither outcome is a fact about Thai manners. It is a fact about whether the thing being queued for can be held by a substitute.

The line this trade does not cross

One useful contrast, from the same news segment that covered the Khaosan grandmothers.

The report ran alongside a piece on รับจ้างด่า — abuse-for-hire, someone offering to insult people on your behalf by phone or message, at rates per minute. A lawyer interviewed for the segment said plainly that it is an offence under section 393 of the Criminal Code, and that both the person hired and the person hiring commit it.

Section 393 says this: whoever insults another ซึ่งหน้า — to their face — or by publication is liable to imprisonment of not more than one month, or a fine of not more than ฿10,000, or both.

And the words “to their face” are doing more work than the broadcast allowed for. The Supreme Court held in judgment 3711/2557 (2014) that section 393 requires the insult to be delivered in the presence of the person insulted; where the parties were in different districts, that element was missing. On that authority, an insult delivered down a telephone line is not an insult to the face.

Which does not make abuse-for-hire lawful. It might still be caught as insult by publication if it is broadcast rather than private, or as defamation under a different section if it damages a reputation in front of a third party. What it means is that the confident answer given on television is not the whole answer, and this site is not in a position to give a better one.

Two gig services, viral in the same month, described in the same broadcast, and the useful contrast is not the one the segment drew. It is not lawful against criminal. It is a trade whose legality nobody has to think about, beside a trade whose legality turns on a distinction the coverage did not mention. Sitting in a chair raises no question at all.

Article 118 found a trade with no lawful version — the child selling garlands at the traffic lights, where every possible legal form of the work has been foreclosed. This one is the opposite case, and it is worth having both on the site: the whole of it is lawful, because sitting somewhere is lawful.

The part that is not charming

And now the thing the coverage treated as the endearing detail, which is the least endearing fact in the story.

ป้าแดง was 68. The state old-age allowance for a Thai aged 60 to 69 is ฿600 a month — rising to ฿700 at seventy, ฿800 at eighty and ฿1,000 at ninety. Article 38 Six hundred baht a month is about that figure and I am not going to re-argue it here.

She was earning ฿4,000–5,000 a month sitting in a bar four evenings a week. That is between six and eight times what the state provides her.

The reporting framed this as a delightful oddity: grandmothers at the nightclub, the young organiser who wai’d her in surprise. It is a good story and the surprise is real — the 23-year-old customer said he had assumed the person booking his table would be someone his own age.

But the reason there were eight women available in one community, at four in the afternoon, on a Tuesday, is not whimsy. Article 89’s finding is that Thai protections are drawn around people who already had options. Article 92 The first toll added the limit: universal is not enough on its own — a universal payment set below the cost of the thing it is for fails the same way as an exclusionary one.

฿600 a month is universal and it is not adequate, and this is what the gap looks like from inside. It looks like a woman who is glad of the work, likes the music, enjoys the company, and is there because sitting in a bar until seven pays several times what the country pays her for having reached sixty-eight.

Both of those are true and the article refuses to drop either one.

Practically

If you want a table at a busy Bangkok venue on a Friday, the constraint is almost never the booking. It is the claim window. Ask what time the table must be occupied by, because that is the number that decides whether you need help.

The trade lives on Facebook pages and LINE, not on the freelance platforms. Fastwork maintains a category for รับจ้างจองคิว / รับจองโต๊ะ, advertised from ฿100 — and it has been empty on both occasions this site has looked. The category page showed no active listings in August 2026, and a search of the platform for รับจองโต๊ะ on 5 September 2026 returned, in its own words, nought jobs. Two observations two weeks apart by two different routes is still not a market survey and should not be over-read. It is consistent with what article 51 LINE isn’t a messaging app here found about LINE: the transaction layer in Thailand is a chat app, and a platform category is where a service is described rather than where it is sold.

Rates in this article are from 2021 and you should expect to pay more. Ask for the split if you want to know what the person actually sitting there receives; at least one operator disclosed it without being pressed.

Common misconceptions

“The bars don’t take bookings.” They do. They require you to be physically present to claim one, usually by early evening, and that is what creates the trade.

“It’s touting or scalping.” No resale takes place. The customer usually holds the booking themselves; what they buy is somebody’s two hours.

“It must be illegal.” Sitting in a chair is not an offence. A different viral gig service from the same month — abuse-for-hire — is, under section 393, for both parties.

“The elderly workers are being exploited.” In the reporting they receive the majority of the fee, more so at weekends, and describe choosing and enjoying the work. The uncomfortable fact is the pension it compares against, not the job.

“It’s a pandemic curiosity that died out.” The mechanism depends on office hours and claim windows, both of which still exist. The specific 2021 rates should not be quoted as current.

Common questions

What is รับจ้างจองโต๊ะ?
Paying someone to go to a bar or restaurant and occupy a table until you arrive, typically between five and seven in the evening.
Why is it needed if the venue takes bookings?
Because many venues require the table to be physically claimed by early evening. Most customers are still at work, so the booking lapses.
What did it cost?
In March 2021, ฿500 a table on weekdays and ฿700 at weekends in one Khaosan operation, and from ฿350 with hourly extensions in another. These are 2021 prices and are almost certainly out of date.
How much does the person sitting there keep?
In the Khaosan operation, ฿300 of the ฿500 weekday fee and ฿600 of the ฿700 weekend fee — the worker's share rises at the weekend, not the organiser's.
Is it legal?
Yes. Nothing about occupying a seat you were sent to occupy is an offence.
Why are the workers often elderly?
The job requires only availability at four in the afternoon. It also pays several times the ฿600 monthly state old-age allowance for someone in their sixties.
