Your bill is not broken
Thai electricity is priced in rising bands, so your bill grows faster than your usage. Triple the units and you more than triple the cost. Plus what your landlord may legally charge.
It is April. You have used the air conditioning the way a person uses air conditioning in April. The bill arrives and it is not slightly higher, it is absurdly higher, and the reasonable conclusion is that something has gone wrong with the meter.
Nothing has gone wrong with the meter.
Thai residential electricity is priced in rising bands, which means the more you use, the more each additional unit costs. Your usage went up. Your rate went up as well. The bill is the two things multiplied together, and multiplication is why it feels like a mistake.
The bands
For MEA residential customers on the standard band structure, the published rates are roughly:
First 150 units: ฿3.2484 per unit Units 151–400: ฿4.2218 per unit Above 400 units: ฿4.4217 per unit
Now watch what that does.
Use 150 units — a modest month, fans and a fridge — and the energy charge is about ฿487.
Use 450 units — April, aircon running most of the evening — and it’s about ฿1,764.
You tripled your usage. Your bill went up about 3.6 times.
That extra 20% is not an error, a fee, or anybody cheating you. It is the band structure doing exactly what it was designed to do, which is to make heavy consumption progressively more expensive. Whether that’s fair to people whose flats are hot is a real argument. But it is not a fault.
Then two more things get added
The Ft. Formally the fuel adjustment charge, currently ฿0.1623 per unit, reset by the Energy Regulatory Commission every four months. It exists to pass through changes in the cost of generating fuel, and it is the number that Thai energy politics is actually conducted through — when you read that power prices are rising or falling here, it is almost always the Ft that has moved.
And 7% VAT, applied to the lot.
So the all-in cost lands around ฿3.95 per unit on the current setting for a typical household — but that headline figure is an average, and averages are exactly what a banded tariff destroys. A heavy user is paying well above it and a light user well below.
For that 450-unit April month, all-in with the service charge, Ft and VAT, you’re looking at roughly ฿2,000 — an effective rate near ฿4.45 rather than the ฿3.95 you read in a headline.

What changed in June 2026
A new progressive structure was approved with the first 200 units capped at ฿3 per unit, with consumption above that charged at rates described as cost-reflective.
The intent is straightforward: cheaper for low-usage households, and no cheaper at all for high-usage ones. Reporting at the time described reductions of up to around 20% for the lightest users.
Which sharpens everything above rather than softening it. If you run aircon, the ฿3 band is 200 units you’ll pass in the first ten days of April, and everything after it is priced to discourage you.
The part that actually costs you money
Everything so far is a few hundred baht. This next bit is thousands, and it’s why I wanted to write the article.
If you rent, your landlord may not charge you whatever they like.

Landlords routinely charge ฿7 or ฿8.
Take that 450-unit April month. At the real all-in cost it’s about ฿2,000. At ฿8 a unit it’s ฿3,600.
That is roughly ฿1,600 a month, and if it runs all year it is somewhere near ฿19,000 — for electricity your landlord bought at the metered rate and sold to you at nearly double.
This is article 12’s territory: not a dramatic scam, just a quiet standing overcharge that most tenants never question because they have no reference price. Now you have one.
Ask before you sign. The unit rate should be in the contract, and a building charging ฿8 will usually tell you if asked directly, because they don’t think of it as concealed. Whether a specific arrangement is lawful depends on the building’s metering setup and on current regulations, so check the position before making an accusation — but knowing the cap exists changes the conversation entirely.
Why April, specifically
Because April in Thailand is not merely hot. It is the month the entire country’s cooling load arrives at once.
Thai peak electricity demand set a record of 36,699.9 MW on 29 April, in conditions of extreme heat — I have that figure from 2024 reporting and could not confirm whether it has since been exceeded, which given the direction of travel it very likely has.
Note also where the peak sits. Nighttime demand climbs because buildings that absorbed heat all day release it all evening, so the aircon runs hardest after dark, in the hours you’re home and metered.
Article 17 described Bangkok’s air and article 58 argued that the malls are the town square because outdoors is unusable. This is the same story arriving as a bill. In a city where being comfortable requires electricity, a tariff that prices comfort progressively is a tariff that charges most to the people with the worst-insulated flats.
The bit worth knowing about the system
Thailand has generally run a substantial reserve margin — around 25.8% at the time of that peak record — meaning considerably more contracted capacity than the country’s highest demand hour.
Reserve capacity is not free, and Thai energy commentary argues persistently that over-contracting feeds into what consumers pay. I’d attribute that argument rather than assert it — the mechanics of Thai power purchase agreements are genuinely disputed and beyond what one article can settle.
But it’s the reason the Ft is politically charged. It’s the visible end of a set of decisions made years earlier about how much generating capacity to guarantee, and it arrives on seventy million bills every four months.
Practical, briefly
Read the itemisation. Thai bills list the bands, the Ft, the service charge and the VAT separately. Everything above is on the paper.
Know your band before you buy an appliance. If you’re already above 400 units, every additional unit costs the top rate, which makes efficiency worth considerably more than the sticker maths suggests.
26–27°C, not 22. The compressor duty cycle is where the money is, and the difference between those settings across an April is substantial.
Check the rental rate before signing, not after.
And note MEA versus PEA. Bangkok and its immediate neighbours are MEA; the rest of the country is PEA. The structures are similar and the numbers are not identical.
